Shishito, Piman, bell pepper, What’s the Difference?

In Japan, we have shishito, piman and bell pepper as different vegetables. But, what is the difference? In fact, the botanical types are the same.
In Japan, they are classified as follows.
Shishito: Small and green in color.
Piman: Larger than shishito, and come in red, yellow and other colors in addition to green.
bell pepper: Large, thick, and comes in a variety of colors including red, yellow, and orange.
In English, bell pepper mainly refers to the spice bell pepper powder.

There are three main types of bell pepper available in Finland. Two are available all year round, one is only available from spring to autumn, similar as piman and shishito.

They are sold as “bell pepper” in Japan. It is palm-sized, thick-walled, and comes in a variety of colors including red, yellow, and orange. Recently, the variety of colors such as burgundy has been increasing.

A wide range of uses, from eating raw to cooking.

We call this dish as Chuka don, it means don food with a Chinese taste. Starchy pork with vegetables goes well with rice.

【Features】
MAKEA SUIPPObell pepper directly translates to “sweet, pointed bell pepper”. As the name implies, it is sweet and long and narrow in shape. It is large, about 20 cm long, and tastes as sweet as bell pepper. However, the flesh is thinner than that of bell pepper in Japan, so I call it as red pepper, aka-piman.
【Uses】
Almost the same as bell pepper. I like the texture, so I prefer to use red bell peppers, especially in dishes that require heating.

Slightly larger than shishito peppers and slightly smaller than piman. The taste is bitter and similar as piman, but the thickness of the flesh is similar as shishito.
GRILLIbell pepper means “bell pepper for the grill”. Sometimes the name of the variety, padron, is written on the product. The origin is Spain.
It is recommended to use them whole as tempura or grilled ohitashi.
